Block Party enables community engagement in local democracy by generating, cleaning, and automatically sharing full transcripts from public forum meetings (specifically Community Board meetings in NYC) for free and at scale — by leveraging AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to make the conversation more transparent and explorable as data.

We are a volunteer-based civic technology initiative. Our team is passionate about creating tools that benefit the general public while also teaching/learning one another from multi-disciplinary skills and expertise. We experiment with innovative tools, technology, and data while also helping to strengthen local democracy.

We are looking for a Full Stack Developer to join our team and help shape our vision. Varying levels of technical experience are encouraged to reach out!

As a Full Stack Developer, you will play a critical role in building and maintaining our platform, which is designed to empower citizens with easy access to local policy information. You will work closely with our cross-functional team to develop new features, manage server infrastructure, design and maintain databases, and integrate with third-party APIs to enhance the functionality of our platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a dynamic and dedicated team to create a platform that benefits the public good
  • Manage server infrastructure and ensure that our web application runs smoothly
  • Develop front-end code for web and mobile applications
  • Maintain databases — such as MongoDB
  • Integrate with third-party APIs to enhance the functionality of our platform — such as SendGrid for providing email service

Requirements:

  • Passion for making a positive impact on your community
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Good communication and collaboration skills

We are looking for someone with all or most of the following technical skills:

  • Knowledge of server infrastructure administration, front-end development, database management, and API integration
  • Proficient in programming languages such as JavaScript or Typescript
  • Experience with Vue 3, Node.js, or React, and other relevant frameworks and libraries

This is a volunteer role that is pro bono to benefit the public good. If you are excited about the opportunity to use your skills as a Full Stack Developer to make a difference in your community, we would love to hear from you.
